Merge PDF Files on Your Phone (iPhone and Android)

You are away from your laptop and need to send one PDF instead of three. Here is how to merge PDFs on an iPhone or Android phone in a minute.

Three PDF files being merged into one on a phone

Key takeaways

  • You can merge PDFs on any phone from the browser, with no app to install.
  • Pick the files, drag them into the order you want and tap Merge.
  • Put all the files in one place first, such as your Files app or Google Drive, so they are easy to select.
  • The files are merged in your browser, so they are not uploaded to our servers.

To merge PDFs on your phone, open a browser-based merge tool, pick the files, drag them into order and tap Merge. There is no app to install, and the files are not uploaded.

You need to send one document, but you have it in pieces: a signed form from your email, a bank statement downloaded from an app and a scanned page from last week. You are on your phone, with no laptop in reach.

You can merge them without installing anything. A phone's browser is all you need.

How do I merge PDFs on a phone?

  1. Open Merge PDF in your phone's browser (Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android).
  2. Tap Select PDF files.
  3. Choose your files. You can pick several at once, or add more afterwards.
  4. Drag the files into the order you want, or sort them by name.
  5. Remove any you picked by mistake.
  6. Tap Merge PDF, then download the combined file.

Our guide How to merge PDF files for free on any device covers the same steps with more options.

How do I find my files on a phone?

Phones hide files in different places, so a little preparation saves time:

  • iPhone: files you saved or downloaded are in the Files app, under On My iPhone or iCloud Drive. Email attachments need to be saved to Files first: tap the attachment, then Save to Files.
  • Android: open Files or Downloads. Files in Google Drive are available when you choose files from the picker.
  • WhatsApp and other chat apps: save the document to your phone first, then select it from there.

If the file does not show up in the picker, move it to a folder you can see, such as Downloads.

What order should the files be in?

The merged PDF follows the order of your list, so check it before you tap Merge. A few typical examples:

  • A job application: cover letter first, then your résumé, then certificates.
  • An expenses claim: the form first, then the receipts.
  • A rental or visa application: the application form first, then the supporting documents in the order the website asks.

If you realise afterwards that the pages are in the wrong order, fix them with Organize PDF. See How to reorder the pages in a PDF.

What if I have photos, not PDFs?

Photos of documents cannot be merged directly. Turn them into a PDF first with JPG to PDF. Our article Turn phone photos into one PDF in a minute explains the steps. Then merge that PDF with your other files.

Why is the merged file so big?

Merging adds the sizes of all your files together. Three 4 MB scans make a 12 MB PDF, which may be too large for an email. Run the result through Compress PDF afterwards. For help with email limits, see PDF too big to email? 5 ways to make it smaller.

Can I merge password-protected PDFs?

A PDF that needs a password to open must be unlocked first. See PDF passwords: the two kinds of locks for what each kind means and what you can do.

Is it private?

Yes. The files are merged in your browser, so they are not uploaded to our servers. That is useful for bank statements, IDs and contracts. Even so, delete copies you no longer need from your phone once the job is done.
