Scanning paperwork is easy — keeping it organised is the hard part. One scan per page, files called "Scan_0034.pdf", a page that went through upside down... By the time you're ready to email it, you have a folder full of files instead of one clean document.
This guide walks you through turning a pile of scanned pages into a single, well-ordered PDF, for free, whether you scan with a scanner, a printer or your phone.
Step 1: Scan your documents to PDF
Before you can combine scans, they need to be PDF files. Most devices can do this:
- Office scanner or printer: choose PDF as the file format in the scan settings. If there's an option for multi-page PDF, turn it on — it saves you a step later.
- iPhone or iPad: open the Files app (or Notes), tap the More button and choose Scan Documents. Line up each page and save — you get a PDF.
- Android: open the Google Drive app, tap + and choose Scan. Drive saves the result as a PDF.
Tip: scan on a flat, contrasting surface in good light. Clean, straight scans are easier to read and smaller in size.
Step 2: Combine the scans into one PDF
- Open PDFixed Merge PDF on your computer or phone.
- Click Select PDF files and choose all your scans at once — you can add up to 50 files.
- Each file shows a preview of its first page, so you can check what's inside.
- Put them in order:
- drag the cards into place, or
- use A → Z to sort by file name — perfect when your scanner numbers files automatically.
- Click Merge PDF, then Download merged PDF.

Keep sensitive scans private
Scanned documents are often personal: ID cards, bank statements, medical letters, signed contracts. PDFixed merges them inside your own browser, so the scans never leave your device. Read more in is it safe to use online PDF tools?
Step 3: Fix sideways and upside-down pages
It's common for one or two scanned pages to come out rotated. To fix them permanently:
- Open Rotate PDF and add your combined file.
- Click any page that's the wrong way round to turn it 90°.
- Click Rotate PDF and download the fixed file.

Step 4: Remove blank pages and fix the order
Double-sided scanning often adds blank back pages. Open Organize Pages to:
- delete blank or duplicate pages,
- drag any page that ended up in the wrong place,
- rotate stray pages at the same time.
Then save once, and your document is ready to send.
Should I scan in colour or black and white?
| Document type | Best setting | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Text-only letters and forms | Black and white or greyscale, 300 dpi | Sharp text, small files |
| Documents with stamps, signatures or highlights | Colour, 200–300 dpi | Keeps important colour details |
| Photos and ID cards | Colour, 300 dpi | Faces and fine print stay clear |
Higher resolutions than 300 dpi rarely help readability but make files much bigger — a problem when an email or upload form has a size limit.
Can I search or edit the text in my scanned PDF?
Not straight away. A scanned page is a picture of text, so you can't search it, copy from it or change a word. To make the text usable, it needs OCR (optical character recognition), and for edits, careful correction afterwards. Our guide on why you can't edit text in a scanned PDF explains your options.

Frequently asked questions
How do I combine multiple scanned pages into one PDF?
Save each scan as a PDF, then open PDFixed Merge PDF, add all the files, drag them into order and click Merge PDF. Download the combined file when it's ready.
My scanner saves each page as a separate file. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Add all the single-page PDFs to Merge PDF at once — up to 50 files — and sort them by name or drag them into order before merging.
Can I scan documents with my phone?
Yes. On iPhone, open the Files or Notes app and choose Scan Documents. On Android, the Google Drive app has a Scan option. Both save scans as PDFs.
Why can't I copy text from my scanned PDF?
A scan is a picture of the page, not real text. Text recognition (OCR) is needed to turn it into selectable, searchable text.
My scans are images (JPG), not PDFs. What should I do?
Most phone scanning apps can save straight to PDF. If you already have JPG files, convert them to PDF first, then merge them.
