Can You Pull Just a Few Pages Out of a PDF?
You only need page 4 of a 90-page document. Here is how to pull out the pages you want and leave the rest behind, with no software to install.
Key takeaways
- Yes. You can extract any pages from a PDF into a new file and keep the original untouched.
- Click the pages you want, or type a list such as 1-3, 7 and 10-12.
- Extracting to one file gives you a single new PDF. Splitting into several parts gives you a ZIP.
- It works in your browser, so your document is not uploaded to our servers.
Yes, you can pull any pages out of a PDF into a new file for free, and the original stays untouched. Click the pages you want, or type a list such as 1-3, 7 and 10-12, and download the result.
You are sent a 90-page report, and the only part you need is pages 14 to 16. Or you have a scanned contract and want to share just the signature page. Sending the whole file is clumsy, and it can reveal information you did not mean to share.
Good news: you can pull any pages out of a PDF in a minute, for free.
How do I extract pages from a PDF?
- Open Split PDF.
- Click Select PDF file, or drop your PDF onto the page.
- Choose Extract pages.
- Click the pages you want in the thumbnails. You can also type a list of pages, such as
1-3, 7, 10-12. - Click the button to create your new PDF, then download it.
The pages come out in their original order in a single new PDF. The file you started with is left exactly as it was.
Three ways to choose the pages
PDFixed lets you pick pages in three ways, depending on what you are trying to do:
| Option | Best for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Extract pages | Taking out specific pages | Only the signature page |
| By ranges | Cutting the file into sections | Chapters 1, 2 and 3 as separate files |
| Every N pages | Splitting into equal parts | A bundle of 2-page invoices |
For a closer look at each option, read How to split a PDF into separate pages or files.
How do I type a page list?
You can enter pages the way you would for printing:
5takes page 5 only.3-6takes pages 3, 4, 5 and 6.1, 4, 9takes those three pages.8-takes page 8 to the end of the document.
You can mix them: 1-2, 5, 8- is a valid list. If you type something that does not fit the document, for example a page number that is too high, the tool tells you instead of guessing.
Will I get one file or several?
It depends on how you split:
- Extract pages gives you one new PDF with everything you picked.
- By ranges and Every N pages can give you several PDFs. When there is more than one, you can download them all together as a ZIP.
By default, the first result is a single PDF that covers the whole document, so you can adjust it from there. If you want several ranges, add them one at a time.
Extract or delete: which is quicker?
They do the same job from opposite directions. If you want to keep 3 pages out of 40, extract those 3. If you want to throw away 3 pages and keep 37, remove those pages instead. Pick whichever means fewer clicks.
What if the pages are in the wrong order afterwards?
Pages come out in the order they have in the original. If you need them in a different order, or you want to combine pages from several documents, do it in two steps:
- Extract the pages from each file.
- Join the new files with Merge PDF, in the order you want. How to merge PDF files explains the steps.
A quick privacy check
When you share only the pages that matter, you keep the rest private. Before you send the new file, open it and scroll through once. Check that it contains only what you meant to share, and remember that a page you leave in may still show names or numbers on it.
Because splitting happens in your browser, the document is not uploaded to our servers while you work.
What if the PDF will not split?
Two things stop the job most often:
- A password. A file that is locked with an open password must be unlocked first. See PDF passwords: the two kinds of locks.
- Restrictions. Some files allow viewing but block changes. If you own the file and have the right to change it, remove the limits and try again.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take one page out of a PDF?
Yes. Open the PDF in Split PDF, choose Extract pages, click the page you need and download your new one-page PDF.
How do I extract several pages that are not next to each other?
Click each page, or type a list such as 2, 5, 9-11. All of them go into one new PDF, in page order.
Does extracting pages change the original file?
No. Your original is not changed. You get a new PDF with only the pages you chose.
What is the difference between extracting and deleting pages?
Extracting makes a new file from the pages you want. Deleting removes the pages you do not want from the file. The result is the same, so choose whichever is quicker.
Why can't I extract pages from my PDF?
The file may be password protected or have restrictions that block changes. Unlock it first if you have the right to, then try again.
